Joyent Features Casual and Social Game Customers at Game Developers Conference ‘11

Cloud computing customers lead conference sessions, demo games that represent 25 Million Monthly Active Users

SAN FRANCISCO — (BUSINESS WIRE) — March 2, 2011 — JoyentCloud, a division of Joyent, the global provider of cloud computing solutions, today announced that its customers, including Oceanside Interactive, Thump Games, Mob Science and Soco Games, will be featured in the Joyent booth at Game Developers Conference (GDC) in San Francisco March 2 to March 4. Visitors will be able to see these companies’ games in action and speak with customer representatives throughout the conference.

Joyent customer Oceanside Interactive, maker of smash iOS hit MyDinosTM, will share their experience in mobile gaming on the same day that their widely anticipated The GodfatherTM: Empire game launches in the U.S. on iTunes.

“Joyent helps new gaming customers get started by providing the most performant, scalable architecture for growth, and we support traditional gaming companies in successfully transitioning from the console to the web with the scale they need to grow their casual game business,” said Steve Tuck, general manager, JoyentCloud. “As social gaming continues to evolve and grow, gaming companies recognize how critical cloud performance is to the success of their games. Joyent is the first choice of developers who require performance and resiliency in the cloud*.”

Social gaming is expected to be a billion-dollar business in the U.S. this year due to the massive growth of Facebook as a gaming platform. According to eMarketer, nearly 62 million U.S. internet users, or 27% of the online audience, will play at least one game on a social network monthly this year, up from 53 million in 2010. Joyent estimates that the number of players outside of the U.S. market is at least as large as inside the U.S. Altogether, Joyent customers contribute at least 25 million monthly active users to the social and casual gaming market.

During the conference, Joyent customer Kabam–maker of Facebook hit game Kingdoms of Camelot–will present a session on how it overcame the challenges of bringing a traditional massively multiplayer online social game to market using strategic insights, creativity and new technologies as part of The Social Game Summit. The session, titled “Zigging While Others Zag”, is on Tuesday, March 1, 4:15 – 5:15. In addition, Nphos– provider of the Red Dwarf platform upon which The World of Temasek was built–will lead a session on how the development of secure, highly scalable and extensible back-end architecture fueled growth that was at times the highest rate of any game on Facebook. The Nphos session, titled “Zoo Kingdom: Building and Scaling a Facebook Game Server”, is on Friday, March 4, 9:30-10:30.

Be sure to visit the Joyent booth (#823) in the South hall of the Moscone Center at the Game Developers Conference in San Francisco from Wednesday, March 2 to Friday, March 4.
