Veteran Journalists Develop Event Devoted to Accelerating Innovation

NEW YORK — (BUSINESS WIRE) — May 25, 2010 — Techonomy, a newly formed media enterprise founded by well-known business journalists, today announces its formation and the details of its debut conference. The conference will be held at the Ritz-Carlton Highlands Lake Tahoe in Truckee, California from August 4-6, 2010 ( www.techonomy.com). Hosts of the conference and founding partners of Techonomy, LLC, are Fortune Magazine veterans David Kirkpatrick, Peter Petre and Brent Schlender.

Bill Joy, a partner at Kleiner Perkins and co-founder of Sun Microsystems, who has been an advisor to Techonomy from its inception, said, “We are at an inflection point in the global economy and need to accelerate innovation. Techonomy is about identifying and promoting ideas, principles and enterprises that have the ability to change the economics of industries and create new forms of growth and opportunities to solve global challenges.”

About Techonomy

Techonomy's founders aim to convince leaders that invention—both technological and social—is central for all organizations. While technology, with its rapid and often exponential advance, can bring about change that is disturbingly fast, it enables us to solve problems that would otherwise stymie us. The viewpoint is inherently optimistic.

"We've created Techonomy because we believe that the pace and gravity of technological change in business and society remains underappreciated," said co-founder David Kirkpatrick. “The Techonomy conference will gather many of the world's smartest and most accomplished leaders to engage in a dialogue about the roles of technology and invention in all areas of human endeavor and act as a catalyst for transferring those ideas across industries and sectors."

Techonomy, LLC, will launch later this year. The model will be a hybrid of original reporting, opinion, aggregated content and contributed long form journalism. The company will create and distribute video, audio and textual content starting this year and will include news and commentary building upon the conference.

The Upcoming Techonomy Conference

The Techonomy conference has already attracted sponsors and strategic partners including: HP, Chevron, McKinsey, Intel, Centerview Partners, LPL Financial, Hill & Knowlton, The World Business Council for Sustainable Development and Scientific American. CNBC, First in Business Worldwide, will serve as the exclusive broadcast partner for the event and will be broadcasting live from Techonomy in August.

Confirmed speakers reflect a wide range of “techonomists” including Bill Gates, Padmasree Warrior, CTO of Cisco, Deborah Hopkins, Chief Innovation Officer, CitiGroup, Reid Hoffman, founder of LinkedIn, and Eric Schmidt, CEO of Google.

Additional speakers include: Prabhu Pingali, Gates Foundation food and agriculture expert, Bjorn Stigson, president of the World Business Council for Sustainable Development, social entrepreneur Bill Drayton of Ashoka, and danah boyd of Microsoft Research New England, and Harvard's Berkman Center.

About the Founders:

David Kirkpatrick, Peter Petre, and Brent Schlender each spent the last twenty years as senior writers and editors at Fortune Magazine, where they led the magazine’s technology coverage during most of that period.

David Kirkpatrick was also founder and host of Fortune’s Brainstorm conference series from 2001 through 2006 and for the Brainstorm Tech conferences from 2007- 2009. In June, Simon & Schuster will publish his book The Facebook Effect: The Inside Story of the Company that is Connecting the World.

Peter Petre has also co-authored several bestselling books include: Alan Greenspan’s memoir, “The Age of Turbulence: Adventures in a New World”; General H. Norman Schwarzkopf’s “It Doesn’t Take A Hero” and Thomas J. Watson, Jr.’s “Father, Son & Co.: My Life at IBM and Beyond.”

Brent Schlender has written extensively about the high-tech industries, business strategy, and management and leadership, and also spent many years as a foreign correspondent for both Fortune Magazine and The Wall Street Journal in Latin America and Asia. He co-developed a dramatic television series with Robert Altman and Garry Trudeau called Killer App.
