Blackmagic Design and Fresco Logic Unveil World's First USB 3.0 Real-time 1080P Video Editing Solution

SAN FRANCISCO — (BUSINESS WIRE) — September 13, 2010 — Blackmagic Design, a world leader in the development of advanced video solutions for the feature film and broadcast industry, and Fresco Logic, a global fabless semiconductor company delivering innovative SuperSpeed USB connectivity solutions, will jointly unveil the world's first SuperSpeed USB-enabled 1080P-capable digital video editing solution at the 2010 Intel Developer Forum (IDF) in San Francisco.

The live demonstration showcases the low-latency, low-jitter isochronous capabilities of SuperSpeed USB by streaming uncompressed High Definition (HD) 1080p60 video from a Fresco Logic USB 3.0 host controller FL1009 to Blackmagic Design’s Intensity Shuttle video editing solution.

Intensity Shuttle is the world’s first full HD resolution uncompressed video capture and playback solution for USB 3.0 computers. Intensity Shuttle is powered from the USB 3.0 connection and features HDMI 1.3, component, composite and s-video capture and playback at full 10 bit video quality. Intensity Shuttle lets customers connect to the latest AVCHD and HDV cameras for direct capture from the image sensor for incredible video quality, while the HDMI and component video outputs provide fantastic quality monitoring with maximum possible real time effects.

Now when connected to the new Fresco Logic USB 3.0 host controller, Intensity Shuttle can unlock the higher quality 1080p60 capture and playback available in the latest generation of gaming consoles and video cameras. This wasn’t possible on previous USB 3.0 host solutions which could not handle the extreme bandwidth requirements.

Intensity Shuttle includes built-in broadcast-quality video at a consumer price, making high-end 10 bit HD video available to even more videographers for true professional work. The revolution in video cameras has given many videographers the ability to create very high-quality raw video content, but without access to studio-grade equipment it has been difficult to preserve that quality through the editing process on projects such as independent films, where high quality is important. Intensity Shuttle lets anyone work at the highest video quality regardless of budget!

"We are very excited to partner with Fresco Logic and their new USB 3.0 host controller is absolutely amazing. It unlocks the quality we built into Intensity Shuttle but due to the lower performance of current USB 3.0 host controllers has remained hidden until now. I am so excited to see that with the Fresco Logic USB 3.0 host controller this quality is now unlocked” says Grant Petty, CEO, Blackmagic Design. "One of the potential benefits of the increased bandwidth of USB 3.0 is that it allows customers to capture and playback at the highest quality uncompressed video, even in 1080p60, so now even consumers can access the same quality images that are used by Hollywood for feature film production. This is a revolution and has never been possible before due the high cost of transporting these high data rates in and out of computers. USB 3.0 smashes this limitation because it combines high speed, and low cost. In addition, if the customers want to use compressed video, they can now choose the compression they need instead of being locked into a specific compressed video format, which was the case on older USB 2.0 or FireWire interfaces."

“This demo with Blackmagic Design is exciting for Fresco Logic because it allows us to showcase the performance advantage of our xHCI host’s GoXtreamTM architecture. The high bandwidth requirements of 1080P video, in this case approaching 400MB/s each direction, had made real-time HD editing impossible on earlier USB implementations. With this demo, we have shown that SuperSpeed USB can provide a platform to manipulate these high-quality video streams,” says Robert McVay, Chief Technology Officer at Fresco Logic. “Fresco Logic loves working with technology leaders like Blackmagic Design to move innovations into the market. GoXtreamTM is just one of what we hope will be many Fresco technologies that will make a real difference to the consumer.”

The world's first 1080P USB real-time video editing solution will be demonstrated at the Intel Developers Forum (IDF) booth 949. The IDF is held at the Moscone Center West, San Francisco, CA from September 13-15 (
