Utilizing the resources available to her, she recruited a fellow peer in filmmaking to aid her in shooting interviews for the film in the Fall of 2013. After moving out to Los Angeles some months later, she secluded herself in a studio apartment and spent the next several months editing her passion project. By the summer of 2014 the picture was locked and all the major editing was done.
In the Fall of 2014, Beautiful Births saw the light of day and had a string of successful screenings, earning the film and filmmaker international praise from the harshest of critics – other women. Reviews of the film and DVD orders came in from India, New Zealand, Australia, South Africa, Ireland, the U.K., Dubai, Canada and all over North America. With the "Mommy wars" raging in the media and mommy-blog world, Jacqui Blue's approach to filmmaking is refreshing, because instead of fanning the flames on a hot topic, she provides information and tells stories in her film which cater to women on both sides of and on the fence.
In a recent interview with Mum's Lounge, an Australian publication, Blue said: "When you are pregnant, everyone wants to tell you their story, and rarely are they good. I want women to hear good stories...We need to change the stories, the images. Birth can be an amazing experience."
Blue's fresh and unique take on this subject, touches upon pregnancy and childbirth in a way that we haven't seen done before. Instead of telling you what is best for you, Beautiful Births provides information so that you can decide what is best for you. The film covers a variety of subjects including diet counseling, interventions, Cesarean Section, VBAC, ICAN, and takes an in depth look at the Midwifery Model of Care taking you inside two birth centers and talking with a midwife and birth assistant. The film also tells the stories of three women and their very different birth experiences. The film is available on DVD and now, as of March 2nd is available streaming through Vimeo On Demand.
"I made a film that was what I wanted to see in the mainstream media about birth. I focused on what I felt were the most important issues to touch upon but there is a lot more about childbirth that should be explored. I want all women to be aware of the fact that they have choices and what they are. Then it is up to them to make their decisions based on informed consent. Because at the end of the day, that's what we all deserve to be given by our health care providers; informed consent," Blue said when she was asked why it was so important to get this film out to the public.
Beautiful Births is now available on DVD and streaming on demand exclusively through the Beautiful Births Documentary website. Find out why women around the world are hailing it as a "must watch" film for women and their partners.
